Carré de Baudouin

An iconic cultural venue in the 20th arrondissement

An iconic venue in Paris’s 20th arrondissement, the Carré de Baudouin is a contemporary art gallery that showcases emerging artists from the local, national, and international scene.

Managed by the 20th arrondissement’s city hall, it curates a variety of events all through the year: exhibitions, talks, workshops, collaborations, and festivals.

Built in the 18th century and classified as a historic monument, the building has been through many different periods. Initially a country house—a Parisian architectural “folly”—it later hosted an orphanage, a medical-social centre, and a youth hostel before becoming the cultural and artistic space we know today.

In 2021, the Carré de Baudouin underwent a major renovation and modernisation. This was also an opportunity to rethink its visual identity, which no longer reflected the spirit of the place. After nine months of construction, the Carré de Baudouin reopened its doors, now sporting a new visual identity designed by Graphéine.

A visual pun

This new typographic logo adopts a contemporary style, more in tune with the venue’s mission.

The logo is based on a simple yet strong visual pun: a square composition that directly references its name, “Carré de Baudouin.” (Carré meaning square in french)

More than a simple nod to the name of its former owner, the square shape conveys the idea of a space, a frame for art, and evokes the concept of the white cube.

A playful approach to letter spacing creates an irregular composition, reflecting the artistic and eclectic character of the Carré de Baudouin. The openings in the symbol express the venue’s desire for accessibility and openness to all residents.

The red color stands out, contrasting with the beige of the building. Even more impactful, this new logo can also be used as a pattern, for example as a background motif for the website or other communication materials.

On the posters, it acts as a visual anchor for the layout grid. Prominent enough to stand out clearly, it still allows the exhibitions’ visuals to take center stage.

Resolutely contemporary, the Carré de Baudouin aims to become a landmark in Paris’s cultural scene.
